HDB INTERIOR DESIGN IN SINGAPORE
From resale flats with dated layouts to older homes due for a refresh, JBYS designs and renovates HDB flats across Singapore. One team handles the layout, hacking, rewiring, carpentry and finishes, so you only deal with one point of contact.
Our HDB interior design service starts by checking your flat’s condition and what HDB’s guidelines allow, then builds the design around your routines, storage needs and style.
HDB Interior Design Ideas Beyond the Trends
Many older HDB flats have generous rooms but dated layouts. These three styles make the most of that space and still look current years later.
Warm Minimalist Design
Best For:
Homeowners who prefer a clean, warm, uncluttered home.
Create a calm, welcoming home with warm neutrals, natural textures, and streamlined storage.
Modern Industrial Design
Best For:
Homeowners who like raw textures, darker tones and a loft feel.
Pair concrete-look finishes, black metal accents, and track lighting for a bold, loft-style home.
Muji-Style Design
Best For:
Homeowners who value simplicity, natural materials, and practical, clutter-free living spaces.
Muji-inspired interiors combine natural wood, neutral tones, minimalist furnishings, and smart storage for a calm, functional home.
Interior Design Solutions for Different HDB Flat Types
Each flat type has its own layout limits and opportunities. Here is how we approach them.
Executive Flats and Maisonettes
These are among the largest HDB flats, and maisonettes span two floors. We zone the extra area for different uses and make the staircase a feature, with storage built underneath.
4-Room Flats
Balance three bedrooms between family, guests and work. Common changes include turning one bedroom into a study or walk-in wardrobe, or opening it up to enlarge the living area.
3-Room Flats
Make a smaller footprint feel larger with an open kitchen where the layout allows, wall-to-wall built-in storage and a study corner that tucks away.
5-Room Flats
Use the extra space for zoned living: a separate dining area, a family room or a home office, with storage planned for a growing household.

Our HDB Interior Design Process
Four clear stages from first visit to handover, with HDB permits secured before any hacking begins.
Space Planning
& Layout
01
We visit your flat, check its layout and condition, and talk through your needs, style and budget. For resale flats, we also check the wiring, plumbing and main switch rating.
Design &
Space Planning
02
We prepare the layout plan, design concept and material selection, and confirm which changes HDB’s guidelines allow.
Renovation &
Execution
03
Once permits are approved, neighbours are notified in advance and works begin. Noisy works such as hacking and drilling run only within HDB’s permitted weekday hours.
Final Inspection &
Handover
04
We inspect the finished flat with you, rectify any touch-ups and hand over a clean, move-in-ready home.

Frequently Asked Questions About HDB Interior Design
Clear answers on HDB permits, hacking, renovation hours and timelines, so you know what to expect before work begins.
Do I need an HDB permit to renovate my flat?
Yes, for works such as hacking walls or flooring, relocating doors and some electrical works. The permit must be applied for by an HDB-listed renovation contractor.
Can I hack walls in my HDB flat?
Non-structural walls can be hacked with an HDB permit. Reinforced concrete walls and the household shelter cannot be altered.
What should I check before renovating a resale HDB flat?
Check the wiring, plumbing and existing finishes, and whether the flat still uses a 30A main switch. We assess all of this during the site visit.
What renovation hours apply to HDB flats?
Noisy works are allowed only from 9am to 5pm on weekdays, and not on weekends or public holidays. Neighbours must be notified at least three days before works start.
How long does an HDB renovation take?
It depends on the scope of works. We confirm the schedule in your quotation once the design is agreed.
